Beverly receives funds for intersection improvement

A grant of $1.75m from MassWorks is being given to the city of Beverly to upgrade the intersection of Tozer Road and Sohier Road.

This grant is part of the Partnership for Recovery initiative of the state and will help to make the intersection more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly, and support the Anchor Point housing facility, which will have 77 units. Harborlight Community Partners, developer of the Anchor Point housing facility, said that all the units will be affordable housing.

The project will add crosswalks, a pedestrian island, a sidewalk, and narrower lanes, as well as drainage improvements, roadway markings and signage, and a left-turn lane onto Sohier Road. Banner printing is often used at such sites to keep the community informed about their progress.

Michael Cahill, mayor of Beverly, expressed his excitement in receiving this grant that he says will make that intersection safer for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians, as well as for the children in the area. Planning and Community Development Director, Darlene Wynne, added that the grant demonstrates that Harborlight Community Partners and the city are working together to make the intersection safer and more accessible, not only for commuters to the hospital and the schools, but also the other industrial and commercial facilities in the area.

Work is expected to begin on the project in the spring.
