Beverly library to hold teen poetry contest

The Beverly Public Library will soon be running its annual poetry contest for students who live and/or attend middle and high school in the city. The Friends of the Beverly Public Library is running and supporting the contest.

There will be two categories in which cash prizes will be awarded—grades six through eight and nine through twelve—with prizes going to first, second, and third place, and an honorable mention. Published local poets will be on the panel of judges, who will have about a month to read the entries and select finalists.

Criteria for the poems are that each must be original, have a title, and be submitted on a completed form. Each student can submit a maximum of three poems. Submissions are due Wednesday, March 3 at 4:00 pm, and can be written online or on paper.

Finalists and their teachers will be notified by telephone or email in mid-April. They will then be able to read their poems at a ceremony at which their teacher can join them. At the ceremony, there will about 30 poems that will be published in a booklet, most likely created by a local Print shop, and distributed. The booklet will become part of the permanent collection of the library.

Winners of the prizes will be announced on Wednesday, April 28.
