Artwork at Beverly library endeavors to increase autism awareness

‘Autism Awareness through Art’ will be on exhibit at the Beverly public Library in the Sohier Room later this month.

Kira Kennedy, a senior from Beverly High School, organized the exhibit. She was a volunteer at the Futures Behavior Therapy Center in Beverly, which is a center for behavior therapy that provides the therapy known as Applied Behavior Analysis to children who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. According to the Center’s web site, this type of therapy can increase a child’s ability to speak and expand their learning abilities when conducted early in life.

This project was part of her requirements to attain a Girl Scout Gold Award as well as her desire to increase awareness about autism throughout the community. Kennedy may also want to work with a local Print company to Print Flyers and other material about the exhibit and the Futures Behavior Therapy Center, thus promoting both the display and the Center.

The artwork on display is that created by her students at Futures. It can be viewed during the regular hours of the library when there are no other community meetings or library programs in progress.

Starting with a reception from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Thursday May 19, to which the public is welcome, the exhibit continues until May 30.
