The relatively recent tradition of wearing “ugly” Christmas sweaters to parties, bars, and other yuletide events is proving to be big business for one Kentucky nonprofit, and a basis for locals to show the spirit of giving over the holiday period.
Master Provisions is an organization that collects and distributes resources such as food and clothing to the needy. This altruistic mission, however, comes with an amusing side effect. As it tends to receive less desirable clothing, the company has built up an ever-growing reserve of gaudy, garish and otherwise overly-festive Christmas sweaters. In the old tradition of taking lemons and making lemonade, the organizers have turned the “ugly” sweater trend into an event of beauty and.
According to employee Roger Babik:
“Throughout the year, Master Provisions retrieves holiday items from the thousands of pounds of clothing donated to us. Then in December, we host a Christmas Sweater Sale. Shoppers have fun and the proceeds help us do the most for the least.”
The sale started four years ago, and has grown in both attendees and volunteers every year. This year, even some local Print companies have created Banners and other marketing materials to help spread the word.
