Google names Florence as switched-on city

Florence was recently recognized by Google as its 2014 eCity for the state of Kentucky, due to its position as the commonwealth’s strongest online business community.

Google issued a press release naming Florence as its Kentucky pick for the 2014 eCity Award and stating that communities such as Florence are being honored all across the country in each of the 50 states.

Florence Mayor Diane E. Whalen credits the city’s diversity for its economic success. It enjoys a mixture of small and large businesses with strong retail, industrial, office, and medical sectors. A combination of a strong business sector and a significant focus on internet sales was what enabled Florence to beat out other cities in the Bluegrass state.

For companies like The Scuba Shack, social media has boosted their sales, since the company posts four or five times a day on Facebook. Another useful tool has been engaging a search engine optimization specialist to direct internet users to the company’s website.

Richard Lunnemann, City Coordinator for Florence, said the city received early notification in late September, prior to the formal announcement. An advantage to knowing early is that it gives a city time to develop a promotional plan to use its eCity award status to its best advantage. Generally, conferring with a local Print company is beneficial in this regard.
