What's Happening in Florence, KY…

Florence looks to find out whats good for the geese

A more down to earth version of Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’ has been playing out in Florence, as aggressive geese have been on a rampage.

It appeared to start at a local video game store in Florence called GameStop, but it soon spread to include the whole parking lot of a nearby shopping center. The geese wander the parking lot making a nuisance of themselves and, on occasion, charging at shoppers as they leave their car to do some shopping.

It is assumed that this sudden burst of aggression is season related. Spring is nesting season for all birds, including geese, so experts believe that these “angry birds” are just trying to protect their offspring from what they perceive as potential threats.

A local television news reporter was sent out on what at first sounded like a wild goose chase, but turned out to be a “geese gone wild” report. The reporter found more than a dozen geese trying to seize control of the parking lot.

Temporary signage obtained from a printing company has been posted to warn shoppers of the geese, while those who have already encountered the angry fowls suggest picking a parking spot away from where the geese are loitering.

Most importantly, they recommend that walkers should give the geese wide berth; the geese will not give pedestrians right of way and, in addition to hissing, they have been known to bite.
