Electrocardiogram interpretation class scheduled in Florence

The Gateway Community and Technical College in Florence will host an electrocardiogram (EKG) interpretation class in a few weeks.

The class will start with the basic techniques of interpreting a 12-Lead EKG and then progress into more advanced ones.

An EKG is a recording of the electrical activity in the heart. This is created by placing electrodes on the skin. It can exhibit regular or irregular patterns – a trained medical professional can spot irregularities and match them with common health issues.

As an example of how it works, an EKG has four main components. These are known as the P wave, QRS complex, T wave, and U wave. The graph paper the EKG is printed on has boxes that each represent 40 milliseconds (thousands of a second) of time on the x-axis. An expert would know that if the QRS complex is longer than 120 milliseconds, a patient likely has hyperkalemia. This is just one of the interpretations students will learn in the class.

The class will award seven hours’ continuing education approved by the Kentucky Board of EMS and National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Students will be emailed a certification upon completion, and may consider using high-quality printing services to print this afterwards.

The class will take place on Saturday, February 26, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Gateway College is located at 500 Technology Way.
