Portage plans hazardous household waste collection day

Disposing of hazardous household waste helps to protect the environment, and a collection day for these materials will be on offer this summer in Portage.

Area households that have toxic, corrosive, reactive or combustible items to dispose of properly will be able to bring them by Portage High School for a collection day. They will be gathered and disposed of in a way that keeps dangerous materials out of landfills. This service is on offer for free, and the organizers have prepared a list of what will and what will not be accepted.

Those who have unwanted fuels and other petroleum products, antifreeze, pesticides and herbicides, oil based paints and solvents will be able to take advantage of this opportunity, and there will be other materials accepted as well. It was noted that tires, “e-waste,” and latex paints will not be permitted, but these will be collected for disposal at a date during the fall.

Hosting an activity like this is a step a community can take to preserve the health of its residents and the local environment as well. A poster printing company will be able to provide items that spread the word so that as many as possible will include it in the plans.

This hazardous waste collection event will run from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm on August 14. Anyone who would like to find out additional information about what will and what will not be accepted can consult the Porter County Recycling website.
