Portage mushroom hounds welcome to join area hike

Even though they are often unseen, fungi play a vital role in the ecosystems they inhabit. Their fruiting bodies are commonly called “mushrooms” or “toadstools”, and mycologist Dr. Greg Mueller will be leading an excursion to the Cowles Bog Trail to search for these organisms.

According to the planners of this guided hike, more than 1,000 mushroom species can be found in the Portage area, and the group will be on the lookout for as many of these as they can find. As they go, they will be welcome to enjoy the beauty of their surroundings, and they can ask questions and learn more about mushrooms.

Dr. Muller has been studying the various fungi that can be found in the area for the past 30 years, and he will share his knowledge with the group. There are spaces available for up to 15 people, and those who would like to be included are asked to register ahead of the date.

The cost to register is $25, and it was explained that this will help to make sure that hikes like this will continue to be offered in the future. Field guides and other materials can be prepared by a printing services provider to help the attendees make the most from this sort of function, and if the pages are laminated, they will be able to be used whether it is bright and sunny or pouring down rain.

The meeting point for this excursion can be found at 1618 North Mineral Springs Road in Dune Acres. The hikers will be hitting the trial on August 24.
