New community store breaks ground

A grocery store controlled and owned by the local community is currently under construction in McHenry County.

Anticipated towards the end of the year, The Food Shed Co-op will find its home on Route 14 in Woodstock. The date for the store’s grand opening date has not been made public. Poster printing is a great way to let the public know about a soon-to-open store.

July 18 marked a significant milestone as the McHenry County Food Cooperative, doing business as Food Shed Co-op, ceremoniously commenced the construction of the grocery store, with the board of directors in attendance. The co-op's vision is to stock up from local suppliers whenever feasible and ensure that shoppers in the region have access to quality food at low prices. It is also dedicated to educating people about the foods they consume, fostering a community-centered approach to nutrition and sustainability.

The store, set to span 9,000 square feet upon opening, will boast an impressive array of approximately 5,000 distinct items. Gallant Building Solutions of Crystal Lake, the co-op's building partner, has started preliminary works.

During the groundbreaking ceremony in July, board representatives shared their enthusiasm for the forthcoming collaboration between the community college and the upcoming store. Among them was McHenry County College president Clint Gabbard, who said the school's Center for Agrarian Learning has the potential to offer valuable information to the community regarding sustainable farming practices.
