What's Happening in McHenry, IL…

Local university seeks to improve cooking techniques

Loyola University is hosting a couple of events this June that will boost skills in the kitchen, and teach an appreciation of wine pairings.

The first event to be held is The Taste of Islands, which will be a hands-on class. Students will enjoy rum punch and chef-made appetizers while they learn about the food and drinks of the Caribbean. They will then be taught how to create several dishes, including a spicy spiny lobster noodle salad, ceviche of conch, jerk chicken, and port and Johnnycakes.

Later on in the month is the Old World vs New World Food and Wine Pairing. The evening will start off with a wine reception with appetizers, and will be followed by a five-course dinner with wine.

Both of these events will likely be of interest to people from all over the area, including nearby McHenry. To make sure many people know about them, organizers may distribute flyers obtained from local print companies.

The Taste of Islands class will take place on June 13 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Fees are $75 per person.

The Old Wine vs New World Food and Wine Pairing dinner will be held on June 18 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Tickets are $75 each.

Both events are being held at the Loyola University Retreat and Ecology Campus in Woodstock. For more information, call 815-338-1032.
