Crystal Lake’s summer lunch program will be operating for the fourth year in a row.
The Northern Illinois Food Bank sponsors this lunch program for kids, which promises to give free boxed lunches to any child in the McHenry or Crystal Lake area who is 18 years old or younger. Volunteers run the program and numerous charitable and non-profit organizations in the area such as Vineyard Church, Crystal Lake Park District, Sage YMCA, and Crystal Lake Public Library lend their support. Flyer printing posted at these organizations will let people know about the program.
The program officially kicks off on Thursday, June 6 and ends on August 14. The lunches will on be served on weekdays and no lunches will be provided on July 4.
Children and teens who wish to take advantage of the lunch program can pop in at Ladd Park in Crystal Lake between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm. If it rains, lunch will be served at the Vineyard Church.
The organizers are confident that there will be a large demand for free summer lunches. Last year, the Crystal Lake program handed out more than 2,200 meals, which worked out to about 40 meals per day. The aim of the program is to make sure that kids who would otherwise be assured of getting school lunches during term time will also have a regular lunchtime meal while school is out.
