Competition open to nature photographers

The Land Conservancy of McHenry County is inviting amateur nature photographs to participate in an upcoming competition.

The competition is the 2023 Amateur Contest. This is a yearly competition held together with the annual Art of the Land fundraiser scheduled for November.

The organizers consider amateur photographers to be those who earn less than $2,000 every year from photography-related work. The competition is organized by McHenry County, although it is open to people who live anywhere in the country. Photographers who wish to make submissions will need to pay $10 to enter.

The best photographer will win $100, the second-best picture will win $75, and the third-placed photo will win $50. A prize of $25 will be given to those photographers who get honorable mentions. Photographers will be tasked with taking pictures at one of the conservation easements operated by the TLC in McHenry. Entrants will have plenty of time between now and early October to visit one of the private or public easements and take pictures of animals, plants, insects, or scenic views.

Select images will be on display at the Art of the Land fundraiser and art show. The photos will also be shared on TLC’s website and could even be used in future publications and brochure printing orders designed to promote the beauty of McHenry County. Applicants have until October 15 to make their submissions.
