College receives ladder vehicle to help students

The McHenry County College was happy to receive a new ladder truck that has been added to its fleet.

The truck was donated by the Stowe Township Volunteer Fire Department. When receiving the new vehicle, Wes Crain, the MCC’s Fire Science Department chairman, said it will be useful in helping students train in aerial ladder work and as part of firefighter courses.

The ladder on the truck can extend up to 105 feet, which is almost seven stories up. The students will use it for training and to gain the experience needed to serve some of the area’s taller buildings such as the Holiday Inn. Crain mentioned that the truck’s height is not its only advantage, as it also has a horizontal reach that gives firefighters the chance to get over large box stores like Home Depot, and over large bodies of water.

The truck will be used as part of the curriculum starting in the fall. The program will teach students how to climb the ladder truck and give them experience on how to handle elevated streams. They will also learn how to make use of the search and rescue equipment that comes with the truck.

The department’s educational program recently gained recognition from the U.S Fire Administration. Acquisitions like this are often publicized through flyer and brochure printing.
