Meridian to become home for forensic laboratory

The ground has been broken on a forensic laboratory for the Idaho State Police (ISP) in Meridian.

The project supports the agencies involved in criminal justice that rely on such services and is a significant investment in the capabilities of forensic science of the state. The laboratory will span 20,000 square feet and will include the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, digital forensics, latent Print examination, and DNA casework.

Development of the facility has been in the design and planning phase for several years, bringing together scientists from ISP Forensic Services, agency leadership, and laboratory design experts to create workspaces tailored to modern forensic operations. The new building will incorporate advanced electrical, HVAC, plumbing, information technology, and other critical systems required for a state-of-the-art laboratory environment.

It is also being designed to accommodate emerging forensic technologies, including the future implementation of sequencing of genomes for sophisticated analysis of DNA. These capabilities are expected to strengthen investigative resources, supporting both active cases and the reexamination of unresolved cold cases.

The State of Idaho General Fund has provided funding for this project, which is the first phase of a planned larger laboratory expansion. More details about such projects and plans for the future can be provided with brochure printing.

The project is expected to be completed in January 2028.
