Sandy Springs sets date for Mushroom Mania

The humble mushroom is part of a group of organisms that play a vital role in their ecosystems, and a Sandy Springs event will introduce them to the public this month.

Neither plant nor animal, fungi come in many Forms, and the workshop, which has been dubbed “Mushroom Mania,” will explore how they live and grow. Roseanne Guerra, who is a Naturalist and Environmental Educator, will lead the discussion, and both edible and non-edible species will be covered.

During the session, the group will learn how fungi often grow in symbiotic relationships with different plants, and they will also find out how they can form a communication path of sorts within their home forests. Along with the edible, non-edible and toxic species, the attendees will have the chance to discover some of the unusual types of fungus that can be found in the state. The activity has been organized by Friends of Lost Corner, and will run for one and a half hours.

A nature-based workshop can provide a deep dive into a particular subject area. Species checklists, ID tip sheets, and other learning materials for such an event can be sourced from a locally based brochure printing professional.

This opportunity to get the inside scoop on fungi’s role in the world will begin at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, October 22. It will take place at Lost Corner Preserve.
