What's Happening in Norcross - Peachtree Corners, GA…

Norcross purchases historic library for preservation

The city of Norcross has purchased a library that is over a century old from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation so that the building can be preserved.

The building had been donated to the Georgia Trust by the Norcross Women’s Club, whose headquarters it was previously. It was the first public library in the county and is on the National Register of Historic Places. When it was donated in August, the Trust said it was looking for a buyer who would renovate the building and replace the roof.

The building was built in 1921 and is a Greek revival in the Carnegie style. It was designed by Oliver Duke Wheeler of Charlotte, North Carolina and its design was approved by Andrew Carnegie.

The city of Norcross has committed to spending $230,000 this year to rehabilitate the building. News of such acquisitions, plans for their renovations, and benefits for the community are often made known with flyer printing and other printing services.

Wright Mitchell, CEO and President of the Georgia Trust, said the building will become part of the nearby historic zoning district and will be managed by the Norcross Historic Preservation Commission. He added that the long-term preservation of this important landmark is in the hands of the Mayor, the City Council, the Historic Preservation Commission, and the citizens of Norcross so that it can be protected for generations in the future to enjoy and visit.
