A new roundabout connecting Highway 85, Highway 92 North, and Hood Avenue opened in Fayetteville on June 8, according to an article in the Fayetteville News.
Drivers using the roundabout were doing so as a result of the Highway 85/Highway 92 realignment project, and were prohibited from driving on that part of Hood Avenue that connects directly to Highway 85.
Chris Hindman, Fayetteville's Director of Public Services, said that engineers from the state's Department of Transportation are planning to put in new traffic signals at the Hood Avenue/Highway 85 intersection. When the lights are operational, the current signals will be taken down, and traffic will be routed through the new intersection.
In addition, Hood Avenue will be extended to the east, crossing Highway 85 to a new roundabout close to Wings 'N' Things. From that point, drivers can keep going east to North Jeff Davis Drive, or continue around the roundabout to go south on a new road that connects to Church Street.
Hindman watched drivers going through the roundabout when it opened, and found that most of them had little trouble learning how to handle the configuration. Hindman said he's happy with the design and construction of the roundabout, and doesn't expect drivers to have much trouble with it.
