Fayetteville firefighters celebrate milestone

The Fayetteville Fire Department recently celebrated its 75th birthday, and invited residents to join in the fun.

Fire Station 91, located at Johnson Avenue and Glynn Street, hosted an open house that included displays of fire trucks, tours of the station, a bounce house, an inflatable slide, training on how to use fire extinguishers, prizes for the children, and a Fire Safety House. Drinks, chips, and hot dogs were provided for everyone at no charge.

In fact, all the activities, including the training, were free. Alan Jones, Fayetteville's fire chief, said the training on the fire extinguishers was offered by the fire department of Peachtree City, while the Fire Safety House, an interactive attraction, would be provided by the Fairburn Fire Department. The house is always a hit with both parents and children.

A fire safety house is a mobile structure used to teach people how to escape a house fire. The house has a kitchen, living room, and bedroom. Nontoxic smoke is released upstairs to simulate a fire, and the bedroom door is equipped with a heating element that makes it feel warm when someone touches it. There is a bedroom window, and an escape ladder that can be used if the main door is blocked.

The fire department might consider having Brochures printed for Mailing to the city's residents, reiterating the main points of fire safety.
