Grand Funk Railroad was one of the biggest, most influential bands of the 1970s, and they continue to pack houses. Starting in 1969 in Flint, Michigan, the group is on their “Some Kind of Wonderful Tour,” to celebrate what will be 52 years of music making.
Like most outfits with such history, Grand Funk no longer has all its original members, but Mel Schacher and Don Brewer are still part of the group. Brewer plays the drums, and in addition, wrote and sang “We're an American Band,” which sold millions of copies. Schacher handles the bass. Other members of the current lineup are Max Carl, who came from 38 Special, and helped found Jack Mack and the Heart Attack.
Also, in the group is Bruce Kulick on lead guitar, who was with KISS for 12 years. Both Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons of KISS say Grand Funk was a strong influence. Rounding out the newest lineup is Tim Cashion on keyboards. “Dr. Tim,” as he is called, worked with such artists as Robert Palmer, and Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band.
