What's Happening in Atlanta, GA…

State entices Mercedes to Atlanta

Georgia has offered $23m in tax credits and other incentives to Daimler AG to encourage a move of its Mercedes Benz USA’s HQ from New Jersey to suburban Atlanta.

Atlanta was one of several cities being considered for the company’s new location, with Raleigh and Charlotte in North Carolina and Dallas, Texas also among the areas contemplated. According to the president of Mercedes-Benz USA, Steve Cannon, the incentives offered by Georgia played only a small part in the company’s final decision.

Daimler will be moving 1,000 positions from Montvale, New Jersey, where it has had its headquarters since 1972. At least 800 of those positions are expected to be filled by new hires. In addition to the new jobs, Daimler’s move will help the Atlanta area economy in a variety of other ways, including providing work for local printing companies.

A more significant factor than the financial incentives in deciding on Atlanta was its geographic positon. Atlanta is fortuitously located between the Vance, Alabama (where the company is expanding a manufacturing plant) and Brunswick, Georgia (a Georgia Ports Authority port city used by the company).

Another factor in Atlanta’s favor is the accessibility of Hartsfield-Atlanta International Airport. Mercedes-Benz USA will, according to Cannon, soon be assuming oversight of the company’s operations in Canada and Mexico and will therefore be having its executives flying in and out from those locations, as well as Europe.
