The Atlanta-based Georgia Power Co. recently received the green light to go forward with solar energy projects at three of the state’s military bases.
After obtaining unanimous approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission, three solar projects (each of 30 megawatts) are now in the pipeline to be installed by the close of 2016 by the Georgia Power Co. Solar power generating abilities will be provided to U.S Army military bases at Fort Benning near Columbus, Fort Gordon close to Augusta, and Fort Stewart near Savannah.
The Atlanta’s Georgia Power Co. and the U.S. Army will work in partnership. At first, the combined total of 90 megawatts of solar generated power will not be meeting the bases’ needs directly. Instead, the power will be directed into the grid, with the bases being given credit toward the electricity they consume.
However, according to Georgia Power’s vice president of renewable energy development, Norrie McKenzie, advancements in future technology will permit the bases to tap into the solar power when necessary. In this way, military bases in Georgia would be assured power during emergencies when the rest of the grid was down.
