The Sharks: Predators of the Sea is the newest exhibit at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta.
The exhibit is 20 feet deep, 185 feet long, and holds 1.2 million gallons of water, with several types of sharks and fish in the tank. Included in the price of admission, the exhibit will include sand tiger sharks, tiger sharks, hammerhead sharks, and silvertip sharks.
The sand tiger shark is not aggressive and eats fish, smaller sharks, squid, crab, and shellfish. The hammerhead shark is an endangered species and is hunted for its fins and meat. Its strange-shaped head helps it hunt for prey.
The tiger shark one of the most dangerous, and is known to eat seals, turtles, fish, birds, and frequently attack humans. Lastly, silvertip sharks are able to see in the dark and have a keen sense of hearing and smell. They attack other sharks and occasionally humans.
Beginning January 21, visitors can participate in the Shark Cage Dive. They will be safely submerged into the shark tank in a cage that moves underwater.
The second hands-on experience, for which a separate ticket will be needed, is called Suit Up with Sharks and Rays. Visitors can wade into an immersion pool with stingrays and sharks wearing a wet suit. Printers design and provide poster printing for exhibits like this.
Tickets must be purchased in advance online, and social distancing is practiced. The Georgia Aquarium is open seven days per week.
