After a year of planning and the construction of a temporary ballpark, history was made when the Atlanta Braves and the Miami Marlins played a recent game at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
The crowd, made up entirely of military personnel and their families, waved Banners to show their support. Service personnel and family members were able to attend the game at no charge having received tickets through their bases.
The event was held July 4th weekend and was part of several events that included MLB players alongside Military personnel and their families. A clinic was held for about 250 children, which was part of MLB’s Play Ball initiative. Both ball teams participated in activities such as visiting patients at the Womack Army Medical center and packing parachutes.
The MLB players seemed as grateful as the crowd for this historic event, savoring every moment as well. Marline player Christian Yelich hit the first ball of the game; he has a brother in the US. Marine Corps.
The Marlins won the game over the Braves 5-2, but the event was a victory for all involved. Although the seating for over 12,000 will be removed, the field will remain in place with plans to have it become part of a recreational complex, which will benefit military personnel and their families.
