The Georgia Dome has begun demolition, and plans to build a large high rise 1,110 room hotel are in place. It will be located another section of the site.
The Georgia World Congress Center, which oversee the site, has reached a pre-agreement with the Boston developer to have it built. The Drew Company will build a $400m hotel.
In the next few months they will identify a name brand or hotel chain that fits their needs. They will be run by state authorities Congress Center Authority and managed by a private corporation.
It will be the fifth largest hotel in Atlanta, with construction proposed to begin in 2019 after the Superbowl. It will be located near Home Depot Backyard, the park and parking lot serving Mercedes Benz Stadium, for which construction is due to begin next year.
Congress Center Authority studied the plan for a year before making a pre-agreement, and the project is not to exceed $380m in cost. Government and state-owned convention centers generate revenue for upkeep and repairs.
The bonds approved for building the hotel will be repaid by hotel operations. The bonds will be tax exempt, which will make the hotel stand on its own.
