Since the collapse of the I-85 bridge in Atlanta over a week ago, numerous agencies are working together to alleviate potential traffic woes for commuters.
Media reports are keeping residents and commuters up to date on the latest developments. Local businesses could help the situation as well by providing employees with information the media provides through Brochures and Flyers. Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has announced it will add additional parking spaces to its busiest stations to accommodate the increase in riders. Additional parking will be available at Chamblee, King Memorial, Brookhaven/Oglethorpe, Kensington, and East Point. MARTA will also provide additional safety measures, including increased police patrol in these lots.
Transport app Uber has announced it will give up to a 50% discount for riders who share a similar destination as long as the ride begins or ends at any MARTA station. The company plans to invest several million in the Atlanta area in an attempt to help the city fight the congestion.
Atlanta school districts immediately released plans to help support the added traffic. These include alternate bus routes and letting parents drop their kids off 15 minutes earlier than previously allowed. The school buses will all be stocked with water in case the commutes take an exceptionally long time, and increased police patrols will be obtained for areas around schools and neighborhoods where there are traffic concerns.
Repairs of the bridge are ongoing and the city is hopeful they can be completed by June 15.
