According to data provided by the Georgia Department of Labor, both Georgia and Atlanta can brag about their improving employment numbers, but as for the latest results, Atlanta can boast the loudest. While the state of Georgia’s unemployment rate came down by a tenth of a percentage point from July to August, Atlanta’s rate drop was more substantial, going from 6.7% to 6.3%.
The unemployment rate for the state remains lower at 5.9% compared to Atlanta’s 6.3%, but it is unclear how much longer it will be before Atlanta catches up. Georgia’s 1.2% drop from this time last year, while impressive, cannot compare to Atlanta’s 2% drop from August of 2014.
In a news release, Mark Butler, the state labor commissioner commented on Georgia's numbers by saying:
“The rate declined as our employers laid off the fewest workers for any month in more than 15 years and continued to create jobs.”
It would appear that job growth is likely to continue. Fewer layoffs, new companies moving in, and established businesses expanding all increase work for a variety of businesses.
