Unusual exhibit comes to Saint Augustine

The St. Augustine Art Association will unveil What We See in the Shadows, an unconventional exhibit inviting viewers to explore art illuminated only by flashlights.

Established in 1924, the STAAA continues to be a vital institution in Florida’s oldest city, curating exhibitions and supporting artists across a wide spectrum of disciplines. The organization remains committed to education, access, and visual arts advocacy.

The exhibition pushes boundaries by removing traditional lighting and challenging the viewer to contend with art in fragmented glimpses.
This exhibit transforms darkness into an interpretive lens. Instead of relying on a well-lit presentation, each piece remains obscured, only partially revealed through directed light and navigational guides. The concept encourages deliberate observation and altered perception, offering a deeply immersive experience.

Works are displayed in-gallery at the STAAA’s downtown location and also accessible online throughout the duration of the show.

Admission to the exhibit is free. The exhibit aligns with the Association's mission to explore innovative art presentation while fostering deeper connections between the viewer and the visual narrative.

To make the wider community aware of art events such as this one organizers may use poster printing around the local area to get the word out.

What We See in the Shadows will be on view from July 17th to August 31st at 22 Marine, Saint Augustine, Florida. Admission is free. Gallery hours are 12 to 4 pm.
