Plant City to discover Florida-friendly food crops

Florida gardeners enjoy a climate, soil, and other conditions that can be highly conducive to raising plants for food, and a Plant City area class will help everyone in the local area to get growing.

Hillsborough County Extension Service provides the public with an assortment of learning opportunities, and one scheduled for June will explore the many options available when it comes to growing fruits and vegetable. Focused on Florida-friendly cultivars, it will run for one and a half hours.

Students in the session will learn how to choose the right variety for their growing conditions and location, and conserving water and improving soil health will be emphasized. Participants will be taught how they can use sustainable methods to grow at least some of their own food, and everyone will go home with starts for species such as pineapple, banana, turmeric, and tropical spinach.

Many gardeners appreciate the chance to explore new topics, and a workshop offers them a chance to do this while meeting others who also enjoy getting their hands dirty. Copies of handouts for an activity can be crafted by Stationery printers.

The Hillsborough County Extension Service will be making it easier for Plant City gardeners to fill their plates with homegrown fruit and vegetables on Thursday, June 6, beginning at 10:00 am. It is set for 5339 County Road 579 in Seffner.
