Plant City youth benefit from workforce education

Many parents dream of their children attending college and becoming degreed professionals, yet many well-paying careers require a different form of preparation. Young people in Plant City are learning of some of those careers through a local program that’s filling an important gap.

Future Career Academy (FCA) began in 2015 with a partnership between Hillsborough County Public Schools and the local business community. It is the central offering from the Workforce Development Partners Corporation, a non-profit dedicated to providing bridges between students and adults regarding in-demand, entry-level jobs with long-term potential. Brochure printing helps promote and explain business offerings.

One particular FCA program is the Business Tours, in which seniors from area high schools visit up to 24 business sites to learn about relevant, accessible work within their own community. The tours are only one component of FCA’s approach, which also involves providing a career-focused curriculum to kids in grades 9-12. Students within their program also receive information regarding transitioning into the work world, training programs, and enlisted service. Tour participants recently learned of several local employers offering paid training, tuition assistance, and access to assistance in obtaining technical certifications.

Workforce Development Partners Corporation is a Plant City non-profit. It began with a single job fair about ten years ago at Plant City High School and has since expanded its offerings and reach. The business now provides its FCA curriculum to 37 high schools in the county. It also offers Best Florida Jobs, a separate program for adult job seekers.
