An art exhibit is currently on display at Orlando City Hall in celebration of Black History Month, celebrating art as an essential part of the culture and heritage of the Black community.
An open call was held by the city for local artists looking to showcase the richness and heritage of African American history through the visual arts. The exhibit features 32 pieces from artists in the area who were inspired by the national theme for Black History Month this year, which was “African Americans and Labor.” The theme shows the various ways that work of all kinds – whether skilled or unskilled, free or paid, vocational, voluntary, or professional – intersect with Black culture and its shared experiences.
Also celebrated, highlighted, and honored in the exhibit is the transformative impact of labor on the experiences of Black people, and the continued efforts of Orlando to create more inclusive and equitable community for everyone. Such special and unique exhibitions are often promoted throughout a city with poster printing.
The exhibition is at the Terrace Gallery at Orlando City Hall, having got underway on January 31. The hours of the exhibition are 8:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday through Friday and noon to 5:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. The exhibition runs through Sunday, March 30 and is free to attend.
