Orlando area festival showcases South Asian film

The long-lived South Asian Film Festival will be returning to the Orlando area in 2021 with a weekend-long showcase of movies from the subcontinent.

The festival is produced in association with the Asian Cultural Association and will show four features, as well as a screening of several short films. The features include The Bengali, a documentary about America-based writer Fatima Sheik’s search for her heritage; 7 Days, a romantic comedy about an Indian-American couple which won plaudits at the Tribeca Film Festival; and Last Film Show, an Indian drama and a love letter to classic Bollywood films.

The short film screening, called “Chhota Cinema: New Indian Shorts 2021”, features seven brief narratives from both India and its diaspora, with content ranging from a comedy about a Bengali-American bachelorette to a Hindi-language documentary about a gender-fluid visual artist. The festival, now in its 27th year, aims to showcase a wider range of films from South Asian countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, as well as their American diasporas, moving beyond stereotypical images of the region. Small festivals like this, often visible through poster printing and theater marquees, can provide a crucial showcase for movies outside of the mainstream.

The 2021 South Asian Film Festival will take place between at the Enzian Cinema in Maitland, near Orlando, from October 2 to 4.
