Expansion for train service being studied in Orlando area

A plan to expand SunRail to Orlando International Airport is under discussion.

The Orange County Transportation Mobility Advisory Commission will be meeting with Lynx and SunRail to gather more information about their plans and what they would do with extra funding should a sales tax initiative be implemented this year.

This proposed project is becoming more of a reality with all parties coming together to pay for the Project Development and Environment (PD&E) study. Amy Lockhart, chair of the Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission, said this study is being made possible by a collaboration between local government, the private sector, and the Florida Department of Transportation. The study will cost $6.5 million.

News of such studies and their benefits for the community are often made known throughout a region with flyer printing.

Lockhart said the expansion that is being proposed would be of great benefit to both visitors and residents of Central Florida. She added that it would enable people in the outer areas of the region to be able to take the train to attractions and to the airport.

Lockhart added that it will be several years before the study will be completed but once it is done it will highlight the best routes for this new corridor that will be least impactful for the environment and the community.
