Jared Santos, a 10-year-old who has been fighting a rare form of bone cancer since 2013, was recently named an honorary firefighter by the Fire Rescue of Orange County.
Engineer Jesse Harris was the one who initiated the idea. His company would serve dinner at the Ronald McDonald House in Orlando and it was there that he met Jared. Over time, they connected with each other over all things related to firefighting.
Harris said that they stayed in touch with each other and he would give a hat or shirt to Jared every time there was one available so as to make him feel a part of the Fire Rescue.
A certificate was given to Jared that recognized him as an honorary firefighter. The audience gave Jared a standing ovation in recognition of his courage and accomplishment.
Both Jared’s mother, Gira Romero, and Harris now look upon the word “hero” in a different context. His mother has said that Jared’s disease has been an ongoing battle and has been very difficult for the both of them, while Harris commented that many people consider what he and his team do as brave and courageous, but this pales in comparison to Jared’s fight.
