The South Florida Water Management District gave a permit approval on May 5 to All Aboard Florida so that a tracks and maintenance facility can be built on property at the Orlando International Airport.
This project is part of the Brightline intercity passenger train system that will run from Miami to Orlando.
All Aboard will now be allowed to build and operate a storm water management system. The size of the property is close to 70 acres and some of it will include 35 miles of new tracks from an existing freight rail corridor belonging to its sister company in Cocoa into the Orlando airport.
Construction has begun on the segment of the train system that will stop in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. This segment is 195 miles long and is expected to be operational in 2017.
The remaining 40-mile portion from West Palm Beach to Orlando will end in the Intermodal Transportation Facility at the airport where the Orlando station will be. That project has a cost of $215 million and is currently under construction.
Bond financing of $1.75m is currently being sought by All Aboard Florida for the Orlando phase of the project.
