Ride-sharing hubs to open in Orlando

The city of Orlando has announced it is starting a pilot program to create ride-sharing hubs to relieve traffic and assist those enjoying the weekend nightlife downtown in finding a safe way home. The hubs will initially be set up as a six-month pilot program with hopes for a continued stay.

The program is a partnership between the city and two popular ride-share companies, Uber and Lyft. The hubs will be run by a private transportation company and a private security company.

Plans are to add amenities to the hubs such as providing public restrooms and working with local food truck companies to obtain their food services. It is the city’s plan to lift some of its codes to allow food trucks to park in areas located near the hubs in the hope of bringing awareness and more riders. City officials could work with print shops to obtain banner printing services to clearly indicate hub locations.

Both companies are in the process of updating their apps so potential riders will be directed to the hub locations where the drivers will be waiting to provide rides.

The ride share hubs will be located at Heritage Square on Magnolia Avenue and east of Interstate 4 at Gertrude Avenue which is near Jefferson and Washington streets. With the program targeted to begin on May 3, the hubs will be open on Friday and Saturday evenings from midnight to 3:00 a.m.
