Orlando workshop explains the world of beekeeping
This week, Beekeeping 101: Honeybee Basics is introducing participants to the skills and steps needed to begin their own at-home bee colony.
Backyard beekeeping has experienced a rise in popularity with almost 4,500 registered beekeepers now listed in the state of Florida.
Professional beekeeping is not simply a matter of purchasing bees and printing business cards; the state of Florida requires registration and the state Department of Agriculture inspects all beekeeping locations to avoid the entrance of any invasive species.
To improve local knowledge about the effort, the University of Florida (UF) is working with Florida A&M University (FAMU) to offer this extension program to help people understand how, and why, to keep bees. The two-hour seminar will teach participants how to handle and acquire bees, manage their colony and harvest honey. All phases of beekeeping are discussed during the seminar.
This class is for people with some knowledge of beekeeping and a genuine interest in the process. It is particularly recommended for those that attended the “Beekeeping 101: Is Beekeeping for Me? session in January.
The seminar will take place on Wednesday, February 21 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Preregistration is required, and the cost of the class fee is $12 per person. Tickets can be purchased through the Eventbrite website or at the seminar location at UF/IFAS Extension Orange County on 6021 South Conway Road in Orlando.
