For the 22nd year running, the Orlando Sentinel presented its annual restaurant awards, now called the Foodie Awards – and, at the end of it all, a few local favorites stood triumphant.
Awards were given in diverse categories, ranging from “best pet-friendly restaurant” to “best sandwich” to “best Middle Eastern.” Perhaps the biggest award, Best Restaurant, went to high-end Portuguese restaurant Ben Bom. The establishment is known for dishes like piri-piri chicken, mango-painted fish tacos, and its legendary lamb burger. Susuru, a Japanese izakaya restaurant decorated with anime and kaiju figurines and known for dishes like creamy pork belly kushiyaki, won Best New Restaurant.
The Foodie Awards were not without controversy. The winner for Best Overall Restaurant was initially listed digitally and in Print as Kres Chophouse, but was later corrected to be the Cress restaurant owned by James Beard Award nominee and mathematics professor Hari Pulapaka. It goes to show the importance of spelling, but Pulapaka had a gracious response to the error, saying:
“To err is human, and despite our best intentions, mistakes occur.”
Newspaper awards like these can be of major importance to local restaurants, and are often featured in brochure printing, Promotional Products, and plaques by the door. The “foodie” name suggests an increased culture around good food and drink, spurred by online discussion and TV cooking shows.
