Proposed mixed-use high rises to host Miami cultural center

Miami-Dade County officials are thinking outside the box with a recently proposed idea of privately leased high-rise towers over Miami’s central library and history museum.

The proposal to turn both the Miami-Dade central library and History Miami into a large mixed-use development was presented to bankers, attorneys, construction executives, and others who would be major players in getting the public-private partnership off the ground. Priorities for the proposed towers would be the inclusion of ample room for the current cultural use, and for pedestrian access to be improved.

Questions concerning the motivation for development of the site were succinctly laid out by the county’s cultural affairs director, Michael Spring, who said:

“This segment of downtown is about to be activated with All Aboard Florida.”

The high-rise development idea was one of many ideas floated and expanded upon at the two-day South Florida Business Journal sponsored ‘P3 Pipeline’ conference held in September. Packets of information, no doubt carefully crafted with the help of Print companies, were handed out to private developers who in turn handed passed out their own premium Business Cards to all and sundry.

Among the other projects the county was considering and possibly seeking assistance with are the construction of a downtown Miami to Miami Beach rail line, a new privately-operated wastewater treatment plant, and an extension by at least 20 more gates of the American Airlines’ concourse at the Miami International Airport.
