The Miami Herald recently reported that Miami native and former administrator for Miami Dade College, Madeline Pumariega, has been named the chancellor for The Florida College System.
Pumariega has the distinction of being not only the first woman to hold this position, but the first Hispanic as well. The Florida College System serves over 800,000 students across 28 schools. According to Pumariega, as the state college system’s chancellor, access and affordability will be her focus.
After working for Miami Dade College for two decades, with 2011 to 2013 as the Wolfson Campus president, Pumariega moved on to her most recent position as president of Take Stock in Children, a statewide nonprofit. During her time at Miami Dade College, she was involved in launching the college’s new entrepreneurship hub, Idea Center, as well as being a key contributor to the growth of the Miami Culinary Institution.
Now, with her latest position, Pumariega will once again be contacting her business card printing service to reflect her latest position.
The new chancellor may carry special insight to her new job, as she is in the process of continuing her own education; she is a doctoral candidate in Miami Shore’s Barry University. With a Master’s from Florida Atlantic University, Pumariega received her bachelors from St. Thomas University and is a Hialeah High graduate.
