Sea turtle nesting season has arrived, and those in Miami who plan on visiting the beach are asked to take care where they step and do what they can to help these endangered creatures survive.
The turtles tend to nest between May to October, and the public can do a lot to help keep the eggs, babies and adults safe. According to the leader of the sea turtle management program administered by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, there are some simple steps beachgoers can take.
People should avoid shining lights on the turtles and not take photos of them with cameras or phones, as the flash may disturb them. Turtle-friendly outdoor lights should be used by beachfront homes to avoid causing disorientation in the nesting females and young who are trying to reach the sea. Furniture should not be left on the beach overnight, as this can trap the creatures and prevent them from reaching the ocean.
The public was also asked to remember that touching the turtles or disturbing their nests is not permitted. Signs can be produced by a printing company to in situations like this to further help make the public aware that they are nesting and that they need to be careful and avoiding causing the harm.
