Miami Beach celebrates 100th birthday in style

The whole Miami area this currently helping Miami Beach celebrate having reached the century mark, with a variety of events.

To celebrate the centenary of its founding, Miami Beach is hosting 100 hours of celebration. The commemoration began on March 22 and runs throughout this week. The number 100 will figure prominently in the festivities, with the public naturalization of 100 new citizens and 100 couples getting married on the beach.

Mayor Philip Levine, who will officiate at the 100 weddings, said about his city’s birthday bash:

“Miami Beach is like no other destination in the world and to celebrate its 100th birthday we are throwing a party for residents and visitors like nothing anyone has ever seen before.”

The highlight of the week will be a centennial concert with a gaggle of celebrities, including Andrea Bocelli, Barry Gibb, Gloria Estefan, Wyclef Jean, Flo Rida, Jon Secada and Diego Torres. The Hard Rock Rising Miami Beach Global Music Festival, as it is officially named, will take place on the city’s iconic beach.

Additional events will include an ongoing photo exhibit held at City Hall, a car show and a tennis tournament. The concluding event will be a climate change conference on March 27, hosted by Al Roker.
