MADD weekend seeks to build awareness

Once again, MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) will be soon hosting an event to raise publicity and funds to educate the public on the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The fifth ‘Walk Like MADD/MADD Dash’ is looking to be bigger and more festive than ever, despite the solemn subject to which it is designed to bring attention. The fundraising 5K lists draws its participants from among victims, survivors, and those who are sympathetic to the cause and simply want to lend their support.

Assuming a wide dispersal of leaflets provided by a flyer printing service, an even larger crowd than last year can be expected.

Those wishing to take part in the Walk/Dash will need to register and are encouraged to do so in advance. The cost is $30 to run and $25 for adult walkers, or $20 for those walkers under 21. Registration costs include a T-shirt.

In addition to the Walk/Dash, attendees will also have the opportunity to enjoy a festival atmosphere complete with children’s rides and games, as well as food. Other attractions will be an up-close look at the Miami-Dade fire rescue helicopter, known as the ‘BatMobile’ and used by the Miami-Dade Police Department for drink driving investigations. Additionally, the Hialeah Canine Unit will give demonstrations using its police dog.

Organized by the Miami-Dade MADD affiliate, the event takes place at Tropical Park on February 8 between 7:30 am and noon.
