Gov. Rick Scott, with a little less than two weeks until Christmas, announced that the workers employed by the state would receive an additional day off on December 26.
The announcement of the extra day off for Florida state employees was contained in a letter on Friday, December 12 to the Florida Department of Management Services Secretary. The letter instructed Craig Nichols that all state buildings were to be closed on December 26 in addition to December 25. This will include state offices that operate outside the capital, including Miami.
An extra day off for state workers has become something of a tradition in Florida. The number of offices, as well as the quantity of state workers in Florida, might surprise the average Floridian. Moreover, the volumes of Stationery printing services they require are staggering. For an extra day, however, the offices will be closed, workers will stay home, and papers will not be shuffled.
This will make the fourth year in succession the current governor has instructed state office to close for an extra day. For the past two years, Christmas Eve has been the extra day off. In 2011, when Christmas Eve was on a Saturday, workers were given the December 23 off. In 2008, state workers were given both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve off with pay by then Gov.
