Bridge closure met with frustration and humor

Miami’s Southwest First Street Bridge, which is an 80-year-old drawbridge, will soon be shut down for approximately three years.

Local newspapers announced that this FDOT project is one of dozens of other projects in Monroe and Miami-Dade counties. Those projects, which were announced with humorous terms such as ‘nerve-frying’, ‘rage-inducing’, and ‘blood-boiling’, will take place over the next several years. Print shops can create similar humor invoking Promotional Products for local businesses to provide their employees who are frazzled over their interrupted commutes in hopes of easing some of the stress.

Artist renderings of the new drawbridge show a clean bridge with new seawalls and a new tender house. For active residents, new sidewalk connects have been created to bring walkers from the bridge deck to the Miami Greenway. A bike lane will also be installed underneath, which will be just over five feet wide.

While the bridge is closed, the West Flagler Street Bridge, which is typically a one-way bridge, will be converted to two-ways while construction is taking place. The construction will not interfere with access to properties.

The replacement of the bridge is expected to cost just under $68m and will commence on May 20, with a completed completion date of June 2022. Commuters are encouraged to plan alternate routes in advance and to dial 511 for up-to-date information on traffic.
