Airport set for major expansion

The Miami International Airport is set to undergo a large renovation and expansion over a 15-year period. The expansion is needed to accommodate the growth that the airport has seen continually over the last several years.

As with any construction project, work will be done in phases and those involved in such projects could work with local Print shops to obtain signage directing passengers where they need to go while certain areas are under construction.

Plans are in place for the Central Terminal to undergo renovations in the check in hall to align it to look more like the North and South Terminal. A larger security checkpoint for Concourses E and F will be built and Concourse G will be taken down.

The North Terminal project will include work on the gates to accommodate the wider Boeing aircraft used by American Airlines. American plans to retire its fleet of Boeing 767s.

Used by American Airlines’ “American Eagle” flights, the Regional Jet Facility will also be updated to accommodate larger aircraft and more air traffic. Work will also be done to create more hold space and concessions for waiting passengers.

To accommodate jumbo aircraft, the South Terminal will be renovated to make more space for parking the planes as well as construction at the gates to accommodate the aircraft.

The airport also announced plans to build two new hotels, improve the roadways and build a parking garage. Work is expected to be completed by 2035.
