The first phase of the Rainbow Village redevelopment project in the Ridgecrest neighborhood of Largo is nearing completion.
The new Heritage Oaks housing complex for seniors will have 80 affordable apartments with one bedroom and replace 48 public housing units that were outdated and were previously on the site. These units are designed specifically for older residents who may not be able to afford market-rate apartments.
Jake Stowers from the Pinellas County Housing Authority said that between the rising cost of living and insurance that it is very expensive to live in Pinellas County. He said that this seemed to be the ideal project to be able to offer affordable housing for seniors.
He added that there will be three community rooms in the project which will also feature upgraded interiors. He said there will be modern stainless-steel appliances and granite countertops. More details about such features and amenities can be provided with brochure printing.
Sixty percent of the median income in the area will be the basis for the rent at Heritage Oaks.
Heritage Oaks is expected to be complete by the end of the year and will be the first of four planned phases to redevelop Rainbow Village, which was once a public housing development that, built in the late 1960s. Phases for the future may include green spaces and new family housing as part of the Greater Ridgecrest Master Plan.
