Pinellas county offers scholarships for law enforcement academy

St. Petersburg College (SPC) and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) are offering scholarships to a law enforcement program that will be able to fill immediate vacancies in the workforce and provide for a safer community.

Residents of Largo are eligible to apply for these scholarships, which include Books, tuition, and certification exams from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Students are trained in first-responder techniques, correctional procedures and operations, defensive tactics, and firearms, among other topics. Programs such as this one, often promoted using brochure printing and other tools, help many students learn skills for a new and stable career.

The program lasts 13 weeks, during which time students can receive a salary of $39,220. Once they complete the exam, they will earn a salary of $50,000. The PCSO has may opportunities for career development, promotion and advancement, and special opportunities, and offers many benefits including paid vacations, holidays, educational assistance, and basic health, dental, vision, and life insurance.

Bob Gualtieri, sheriff of Pinellas County, expressed his excitement in being able to partner with SPC in offering scholarships that will ease the financial burden of students who wish to become correctional officers. Michael Ramsey, Dean of Workforce Development at SPC, thanked the Florida Department of Education and the Governor to make these scholarships possible as a part of the Get There Florida initiative.
