Ground has been broken on the Majeed Discovery Center in Largo.
The center will be on two acres of land on the northwest corner of the Florida Botanical Gardens, along McKay Creek and next to the Visitors Center. It will feature an outdoor classroom that will be 600 square feet in size, experiences with nature themes, planting beds, exploratory trials, and exhibits and a sensory garden for children to pass through for an experience to stimulate the senses.
There will also be an area for children to play percussion instruments to be known as the “Musical Forest”, a bamboo bridge through an existing grove of tall-timber bamboo, art display areas, play equipment, and an outdoor stage, as well as picnic tables and seating for adults. News about such new projects and their need to raise funds to cover their costs of construction are often made known throughout a community with flyer printing.
John Thomas, president of the board of the Florida Botanical Gardens Foundation, which is building the center, said this will be a place for children to explore and learn, adding it will be open to visitors and residents of the county, and will be free of charge. He added that gardens for children are places where kids can see fibers and food grow, interact with plants, and experience the roles of bees, butterflies, and birds in nature, providing ideal learning opportunities.
