Largo to undertake large-scale development

The city of Largo is planning on major growth with the expansion of the community redevelopment districts (CRDs) of Clearwater-Largo Road and West Bay Drive. This will include the annexing of unincorporated areas as part of the city.

Robert Klute, Assistant Community Development Director, said that the area will go east as far as Betty Lane that will add 537 acres for a total of 844 acres in the Clearwater-Largo Road CRD. A planner for Kimley Horn, the consulting firm for the city, Jared Schneider, said that priorities for the area will focus on creating walkable areas, improving safety, beautifying properties, and making improvements of roadways and for pedestrians. He added that the plan will have seven components, of which the core components will be housing, mobility, and economic development.

Additional elements to the plan will include branding for each unique character district in the CRDs, adding more space for the public, improvements to sustainability, and encouraging mixed-use development in the downtown. Clearwater-Largo Road and Missouri Avenue will also be made safer.

Such major development projects often rely on brochure printing to offer more details about their features and offerings.

Schneider said that it will take about 20 years to complete the plan. It will begin with small-scale projects and programs in the first five years and then graduate to projects of a larger scale that will require multiple sources of funding after the first 10 years.
